Small Business SEO Checklist: 12 Steps to Rank on Google in 2026

You don’t need a big budget to rank on Google — you need the fundamentals done right. Here’s the exact SEO checklist we run on every project, written for business owners, not engineers.

On-page basics

1. One clear title and description per page

Every page needs a unique <title> (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155). These are your free ad copy in search results — write them to earn clicks.

2. One H1 that matches intent

Use a single, descriptive H1 per page that reflects what someone would actually search for.

3. Clean, readable URLs

/services/wordpress-development beats /?p=123. Use words, not query strings.

4. Descriptive image alt text

Helps image search and accessibility. Describe what each meaningful image shows.

Technical SEO

5. Fast loading speed

Aim for under 2.5 seconds. Compress images, enable caching, and use a CDN. Speed affects both rankings and conversions — see our WordPress development approach to performance.

6. Mobile-friendly design

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If it’s not great on a phone, it won’t rank.

7. HTTPS everywhere

A valid SSL certificate is a baseline ranking signal and a trust marker. Non-secure sites get flagged and demoted.

8. XML sitemap + Search Console

Submit your sitemap and connect Google Search Console so Google can find and index every page — and so you can see how you’re performing.

9. Structured data (schema)

Add Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ, and Service schema. It unlocks rich results — stars, FAQs, business info — that make your listing stand out.

Content & local

Write pages and posts around the questions and phrases your customers actually type. Helpful content earns rankings and trust.

11. Claim your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, this is the single highest-impact step. Complete it fully, add photos, and collect reviews.

Link related pages to each other. It helps Google understand your site and keeps visitors moving toward your contact page.

Make it easier

This checklist is the foundation. Working through it steadily compounds — most sites see real movement within a few months. Want it done for you? Our builds include technical SEO from day one.
